Most people living in San Diego County are not aware that there are over 50 wineries located across the County, with even more vineyards scattered from Poway to Jamul.   Grapes grow exceptionally well and the climate is especially great for red grapes and several white varietals.  These wineries have been started by small families, planting the grapes, learning the wine making techniques, making the wine and bottling, and then marketing and distributing themselves.   Think of Napa Valley back in the 70’s and of Temecula in the 90’s, and that’s where San Diego County is today.  Grapes are being planted at record rates, replacing high water using avocado and citrus groves.  Many local wines are starting to be carried in Costco, and other produce and grocery stores.  Next time, you are in the mood for a bottle of wine, ask for and purchase a bottle from a local winery.  You will be supporting a family vineyard, and buying locally…a good way to support our farming families and local economy!
